Even though Donald Trump has found his way to become one of the most powerful leaders in the world, he hasn’t let that change his mobile phone preferences.
President Trump was urged to use a new secure mobile device once he entered into office, however, he refused to use it. Instead, he opted to continue to use his personal Android phone.
Security officials are concerned that his refusal to use the new secure device he was offered may pose a threat to the security of the nation and its allied countries.
He Was Told to Hand over His Phone
President Trump was told that he would have to hand over his personal mobile device once he took his official position as president of the United States. Despite the warning, he refused to hand over his Android phone and is continuing to use it.
This was reported by the New York Times.
What Is the Problem with His Android Phone?
The problem with President Trump holding onto his Android phone is that it’s age makes it a honeypot for hackers. Older devices tend to receive less frequent updates. As a result, they are often targeted by hackers, which theoretically makes his commuication lines insecure.
Not only that, they can also access both cameras, the microphone, and the location data that the phone is transmitting.
As you may have guessed, these can all contribute to major security threats.
Is Hacking into an Android Phone That Easy?
To hack into an android phone, all you need is for someone to install an infected .APK file, or an App containing malware. There are also other less serious threats, such as beef, a popular browser epxloitation tool.
If you take a target as valuable as President Trump, it’s only a matter of time before hackers will begin to attempt penertrate his technology.
Protecting Classified Information
Anytime you are dealing with classified information, it is necessary to take extra steps to ensure that is kept secret.
Mobile devices are highly vulnerable and riddled with exploits that hackers will continue to find. The reason they are so vulnerable is because mobile devices are designed to communicate and connect to a variety of different mediums.
Your device is able to make phone calls, access Wi-Fi, record videos, relay location information, and connect through Bluetooth devices.
All these different connection sources open a variety of different windows that hackers can use to access your phone phone.
What Type of Phone Is President Trump Using?
This is where it gets worse. President Trump is using an outdated phone. He uses the Samsung Galaxy S3, which was released five years ago in 2012.
He doesn’t regularly update his phone’s software either. Software updates are released to help protect mobile devices from vulnerabilities as they are figured out. Without updating your device, like president trump has failed to do, his phone is at even further risk of being hijacked.
A Writer’s Opinion
In my opinion, it doesn’t hurt to switch to a more secure line, however, Donald Trump is not new to being a target for security hacks. He has been one of the most powerful men in the country for decades and his Android device has never caused him any issues in the past.
His phone is only one piece of the puzzle. I’m sure his actual communcation lines are secured. This would include any wifi or mobile connectivety he uses.
His refusal to turn over his device is concerning. It shows that he is not willing to budge even a little bit in order to cooperate for the sake of national security. Maybe he thinks it’s a non-issue and brushed it off, however, presidents in the past have always had to adhere to this safety precaution.
It’s a request that will continue to be given to President Trump, as well as all future present going forward.
My finals words – stop being so arrogant and get with the times. If you have any regard to national security you’d have handed in your phone long ago.
